Happy New Year First Grade Families!
We are excited to welcome Rebecca Hanks as the new first grade teacher in Room 121. Ms. Hanks has a rich background in math instruction and has been a part of Oakland as a Math Fellow last semester. She is a great addition to our team.
First Grade took last week to reestablish routines and classroom expectations. This week we are launching our Reading Comprehension strategies, with a focus in thinking about our reading and listening to our inner voice. This will help our students to pay attention while they read and to notice their inner dialogue. Thinking out-loud will lead our students to develop questions about the text and become critical thinkers. In Math, we are working on number sense and continuing to practice addition and subtraction to 20. You can help at home by asking your scholar to combine numbers around the house, while cooking, in the tub, etc... In Writing, students will be developing How-To books on a topic or subject of their choice. We will conclude the unit with a writing celebration. Stay tuned for an invite to share your child's writing.
We are looking forward to another fabulous semester. If you have any questions please feel free to contact your child's teacher.
